The new Indian garlic crop for 2026 has started arriving in the market. The early harvest has begun with the Ooty variety, and the crop condition is better compared to last year. The quality, size, and availability are showing positive trends for exporters and buyers.

Ooty Garlic Crop Update

The Ooty variety garlic crop has already started in India. This variety is known for its good bulb size and easy peeling characteristics. Compared to the previous year, the 2026 crop quality and yield are better.

Currently available sizes for Ooty garlic are: 35 mm+ 40 mm+

This variety is widely preferred by garlic peeling units because the skin can be removed easily. Due to this feature, Ooty garlic is suitable for industrial peeling and processing.

Desi Garlic Crop Update

The Desi garlic crop has also started arriving in the market. At the beginning of the harvest season, the moisture level in Desi garlic is slightly high. However, the moisture is expected to normalize by the end of March as the crop continues to dry naturally.

Available sizes in Desi garlic include: 25 mm, 30 mm, 35 mm, 38 mm and above

Desi garlic is commonly used by processing industries for garlic paste, garlic sauce, and extraction units. It is widely preferred in food processing because of its strong flavor and high solid content.

Garlic Packing and Shipment

For export shipments, garlic is packed in 25 kg mesh bags. Shipments are usually loaded in 40 ft high cube reefer containers with approximately 29 metric tons loading capacity. Reefer containers help maintain product quality during long-distance transportation.

Garlic Export from India

India is one of the major producers and exporters of garlic. The 2026 crop outlook looks stable with good supply from both Ooty and Desi varieties.

Savaliya Agri Commodity Export Pvt Ltd is one of the leading exporters of fresh garlic from India. The company supplies garlic for different industrial uses including garlic peeling units, garlic paste manufacturing, garlic sauce production, and extraction units.

With strong sourcing networks and export experience, the company ensures reliable supply and consistent quality for international buyers.

Conclusion

The Indian garlic crop for 2026 has started with positive supply conditions. Ooty garlic is currently available with good size and quality for peeling industries, while Desi garlic is ideal for paste, sauce, and extraction purposes. As the season progresses, moisture levels and supply conditions are expected to stabilize, making it a good time for buyers to plan their garlic imports from India.

The 2025 Indian Ooty garlic crop harvesting has already commenced, albeit slowly, in the Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Rajasthan regions. It is anticipated that shipments of the new crop will begin around the middle of February 2025.

The size of the Indian Ooty garlic bulbs this year is expected to be in the range of 4-5 cm, which is ideal for peeling, making this year’s harvest especially valuable for processing purposes. Additionally, the volume of the crop is projected to be nearly double that of last year, indicating a significant increase in overall production.

This increased yield will likely lead to a more stable supply for both domestic and international markets. However, market conditions should be closely monitored, as the surge in production could result in price fluctuations depending on the demand across different regions.

Market Outlook:

Given the larger crop size and higher production, market prices could experience some pressure. However, the demand for garlic, particularly for peeling, is expected to remain strong, providing support for stable pricing. Export opportunities, especially for peeled garlic, should see growth in the coming months. Additionally, domestic consumption is likely to increase as well, contributing to balanced market conditions.

Overall, while the larger crop may lead to some initial price volatility, the strong demand for this high-quality, peeled garlic should help stabilize the market in the mid-to-long term.

The Indian onion market has faced considerable fluctuations in prices and supply conditions over the past few months, driven by a range of factors. Here’s a more detailed overview:

1. Price Trends and Volatility

Price Decline: As of mid-December 2024, onion prices dropped significantly by around 50% in a week. In major wholesale markets like Navi Mumbai, the price fell to ₹20-25 per kilogram. This drop is attributed to the arrival of the new kharif crop and the imposition of export duties, which dampened export demand.

Price Surge: Earlier, in October 2024, onion prices surged dramatically due to a range of factors, including a delay in the kharif crop caused by heavy rains and strong domestic and export demand. In cities like Pune, Delhi, and Chandigarh, prices exceeded ₹100 per kilogram. This price spike put considerable strain on domestic consumers.

2. Government Intervention

To stabilize prices and ensure affordable onions in the domestic market, the Indian government has actively intervened in the onion market:

Buffer Stock Release: To ease the price pressure, the Indian government decided to release onions from the buffer stock in October 2024. This was intended to bring more onions into the retail market, easing shortages and curbing price rises.

Export Policy Adjustments: The Indian government has implemented export policies that have influenced onion prices. In particular, in November 2024, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar suggested that the 20% export duty on onions should be removed to allow farmers to benefit from higher export demand, thus stabilizing domestic prices.

Price Stability Measures: The government is aiming for price stabilization by managing stock releases and regulating exports. Efforts to cool down the market by increasing supply are evident, with the new kharif crop expected to play a major role in price moderation.

3. Exports and Trade Impact

Export Demand: Indian onions are a significant export commodity, particularly to countries in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and neighboring regions. While onions have faced price volatility domestically, demand from export markets continues to be strong, particularly for quality onions. This has contributed to price fluctuations, as higher export demand can lead to lower availability in the domestic market, driving prices up.

Impact of Export Duty: The 20% export duty imposed in September 2024 created a barrier for exporters, leading to reduced export volumes. This policy was intended to safeguard domestic availability but had a mixed impact on farmers, who struggled with lower prices. Industry leaders and politicians have called for this export duty to be rolled back.

4. Outlook and Market Predictions

The outlook for the Indian onion market remains volatile in the short term, with prices largely dependent on:

Kharif Crop: The new kharif onion crop is expected to reach the markets in December 2024 and January 2025, which will help ease supply shortages. However, the quality and quantity of this crop are still subject to climatic conditions, and any delays or quality issues could lead to continued price fluctuations.

Government Measures: The government’s ongoing efforts to control prices through buffer stock releases and regulation of exports will likely remain a key factor in price stabilization.

Weather Impact: The weather conditions during the rabi season, which starts in January, could further influence supply conditions. Any disruptions to the normal weather patterns, such as excessive rainfall or drought, could affect onion yield and prices.

Overall, the onion market is expected to experience continued volatility, with prices potentially falling in the short term due to the arrival of new crops but remaining susceptible to fluctuations in demand, supply, and government interventions.

In December 2024, the onion market in Nashik, Maharashtra, faces challenges due to the late arrival of the new crop and weather-related disruptions. Unseasonal rains have caused significant damage to standing and harvested kharif onions across approximately 50,000 hectares in the region, including Nashik and nearby districts. This has reduced market arrivals and increased wholesale prices.

Currently, daily arrivals at major Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) like Lasalgaon have dropped to nearly half of the usual supply, leading to wholesale prices hovering between ₹30-₹42 per kilogram depending on quality. Retail prices are significantly higher in urban markets. The delayed kharif and late kharif harvests are expected to stabilize supplies by mid-December, provided there are no further weather disruptions

The fragrant allure of Indian desi garlic is set to tantalize taste buds once again as the crop for 2024 heralds its arrival. With sizes ranging from 25-35mm, 35-40mm, and 40mm+, this year’s harvest promises versatility and flavor in abundance.

In contrast to its Chinese counterpart, Indian desi garlic may not boast bold cloves, but it more than compensates with its unparalleled taste and aroma. Renowned for its richness, Indian garlic stands out as the ideal choice for manufacturers crafting garlic pastes and sauces, elevating culinary experiences with every use.

As the new crop prepares for distribution, importers and distributors are cordially invited to explore the essence of Indian desi garlic. For inquiries and partnerships, seize the opportunity to savor the essence of authentic Indian flavors in every bite.

Embrace the Flavor: Indian Garlic Takes the Lead

In the realm of culinary delights, garlic stands as an indispensable ingredient, lending its distinct flavor and aroma to an array of dishes. Among the myriad varieties available worldwide, Indian garlic emerges as a champion, boasting not only taste but also size and aromatic qualities that set it apart. As we usher in a new crop, characterized by garlic bulbs ranging from 25-35mm, 35-40mm, and 40mm+, it’s time to celebrate the culinary treasure that is Indian garlic.

For manufacturers seeking to elevate their products with authentic flavor and quality, Indian garlic presents an unparalleled opportunity. Its robust taste and aroma lend themselves perfectly to sauces, pastes, and various culinary creations, ensuring a delightful experience for discerning palates.

Fresh garlic offers numerous health benefits due to its potent compounds, including allicin, sulfur compounds, and antioxidants. Here are some of the potential health benefits associated with consuming fresh garlic:

Immune system support: Garlic has antimicrobial properties that may help fight off infections, including viruses, bacteria, and fungi. It may also stimulate the activity of immune cells, helping the body defend against illnesses.

Heart health: Garlic has been linked to various cardiovascular benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and improving cholesterol levels. It may help reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol levels.

Antioxidant properties: Garlic contains antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases, including certain cancers and neurodegenerative disorders.

Anti-inflammatory effects: Compounds in garlic have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help alleviate inflammation in the body and reduce the risk of chronic inflammatory conditions.

Blood sugar regulation: Some studies suggest that garlic may help regulate blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity, which could be beneficial for individuals with diabetes or those at risk of developing the condition.

Improved digestion: Garlic may promote digestive health by stimulating the production of digestive enzymes and supporting healthy gut bacteria.

Detoxification: Garlic contains sulfur compounds that support liver function and aid in detoxification processes, helping the body eliminate toxins and harmful substances.

Bone health: Garlic may help maintain bone health by increasing estrogen levels in females, which can help prevent bone loss associated with aging and conditions like osteoporosis.

Cold and flu relief: Garlic has been traditionally used to alleviate symptoms of the common cold and flu due to its immune-boosting and antimicrobial properties.

Cancer prevention: Some research suggests that garlic consumption may reduce the risk of certain cancers, particularly those affecting the digestive system, such as stomach and colorectal cancers, although more studies are needed to confirm these effects.

It’s essential to note that while fresh garlic offers numerous health benefits, it should be consumed as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. As with any dietary component, moderation is key, and individuals with specific medical conditions or allergies should consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to their diet.
